I am writing to you today to declare my intention to be the NDP candidate for Peterborough – Kawartha in the 2019 Federal election.
I believe we live in difficult times, but that with courage and hope we – the people of Peterborough-Kawartha – can be leaders in creating positive change for all Canadians. Working together, under the leadership of Jagmeet Singh’s NDP, we can fight the threats of climate change, the undermining of human rights, and the short-sightedness of politicians who continue business as usual in a changing world.
Over the past twenty-five years, I’ve worked as a Cultural Producer and Community Organizer, in Peterborough, Toronto, and Northumberland County, producing arts festivals and events with a focus on green initiatives and creating intergenerational spaces for community connection.
In 2014, I founded Secret Frequency, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to inclusion, diversity, and fair pay in the music industry. With our ‘Canadian Festival Report Card’ initiative encouraging gender parity at music festivals, we’ve seen astonishing progress across the country over the past three years, as more women than ever are hired to play festival stages in Canada.
As a lifelong culture worker, I am familiar with precarious work and the stresses of the ‘gig economy,’ and I am eager to fight for workers’ rights, equal pay and pay transparency, affordable childcare and a strong education system for families, and affordable housing. I am an ardent advocate for safe, legal, barrier-free abortion. And I know that the path to economic stability is through sustainability, investing in our citizens, and facing the threats of climate change head-on.
I know that Peterborough-Kawartha is a region of great potential, of great natural beauty, and that people here are ready to stand up and be counted. I am ready to stand with you, and to bring real change to Peterborough-Kawartha.
I look forward to seeing you at the NDP Nomination Meeting on Wednesday, June 26 at the Peterborough Public Library.
